The Camp Environment:
The
Staff: A Healthy and Fun Camp Environment begins with the staff
that we hire to serve your campers. We hire young people from around our
region and around the world (over the past two summers we have had staff from
New Zealand, Australia, and South Africa) to serve as counselors, lifeguards,
and support staff at camp. All Summer Staff are interviewed and undergo a
background check before they are hired. They arrive for ten days of
intensive staff training before we ever have a week of campers. During
this time, our staff are oriented to the camp as well as all of our Health and
Safety Procedures. All Counselors and Lifeguards complete an American Red
Cross First Aid and CPR Class during this time as well. The Staff also
takes time to learn about age characteristics of campers, and spends intensive
time with our curriculum learning how to teach our daily Bible Studies.
Accreditation:
Camp Monroe is accredited with The American Camping Association. This
means that we voluntarily belong to the nation's only national accrediting body
for camps. The ACA sets standards in areas such as Operational Management,
Health and Wellness, Program Design, Food Service, Transportation, and much
more. Keeping up to date with ACA standards helps us to ensure that we are
providing the best possible care for your camper. For more on the ACA,
visit them at www.acacamps.org.
Health,
Wellness and Safety: We take seriously the responsibility of
looking after our camper's health and safety. During the Registration and
Confirmation process you'll have the chance to document any allergies or medical
conditions your camper has so that we can take appropriate steps to make sure
your camper's needs are met. When you check in at camp you'll have the
chance to meet our Camp Health Supervisor, drop off any ongoing medications your
child might have, and update anything that has changed since you registered for
camp. All equipment used at camp is kept up to date and maintained.
All campers are oriented to and use proper safety equipment when in activity
blocks such as horseback riding or
The Agogae
Trail Our adult to camper supervision ratios are set by the ACA (see
above), and our supervision ratios at our pool and waterfront are set by the
American Red Cross.

Small Group Camping: Our camp model is set up for campers to build a close community with a small group of campers. Each cabin group will be paired with another cabin (usually a cabin of girls and a cabin of boys of the same age group), to form a family group. During the day they will travel to all of their activity blocks together. All campers will have the same counselor all week which allows them to develop bonds with them, and also provides some familiarity and stability for those campers who may experience homesickness. Campers are encouraged to bring a friend to camp to share the fun, but if not, no worries, we'll put you in a cabin with new friends waiting to be made! Campers will get the chance to know campers outside their family groups at meals, swim times, and evening all-camp activities.
